The EMBL International PhD Programme 2026 stands out as a role model for research institutions worldwide. The program provides comprehensive interdisciplinary training that maintains a careful balance between theory and practice. Students benefit from close mentoring and creative freedom, allowing them to thrive in collaborative teamwork environments while developing independence.
The program is defined by an enriching encounter of different nationalities and a passion for science that unites EMBL’s diverse staff. This environment provides the ideal setting to forge long-lasting connections. Furthermore, to handle the complexity of current biological research, the EIPP actively encourages candidates with backgrounds in chemistry, physics, mathematics, molecular medicine, computer science, or engineering to apply and work closely with biologists.
Two recruitment rounds are organized each year across all EMBL sites. Currently, registration for the 2026 PhD Summer Recruitment is open.
A hallmark of the EIPP is the annual EMBL International PhD Symposium. Since its first edition in 2000, this has developed into a well-recognized scientific event. It is always EMBL’s first-year PhD students who take on the responsibility for the conceptual development and organization of the meeting.
These symposia provide a great platform for networking and scientific exchange, featuring lectures by top-level scientists and opportunities for young researchers to present their work.
