The Matsumae MIF Fellowship 2027 Japan is a fully funded international research fellowship for outstanding researchers from around the world. About the Fellowship
The Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship is one of Japan’s most prestigious research programs for international scholars. Established to strengthen international understanding and promote global academic collaboration, the fellowship supports researchers conducting advanced studies in selected scientific disciplines.
Participants undertake independent research projects under the supervision of host institutions in Japan. Fellows also gain exposure to Japanese culture, establish professional networks, and contribute to international scientific advancement through collaborative research activities.
Approximately 15 fellowships are awarded annually to highly qualified researchers who demonstrate strong academic achievements and the potential to contribute meaningfully to their respective fields.
Eligibility Criteria
Academic Qualification
- Applicants must hold a PhD degree at the time of application.
- Candidates should have a strong academic and research background.
- Research proposals must fall within the approved fields of study.
Experience & Other Conditions
- Applicants must be non-Japanese citizens.
- Candidates must be 45 years old or younger.
- Applicants must be employed full-time in their home country.
- Fellows must return to their home country after completing the fellowship.
- Candidates must possess sufficient English or Japanese language proficiency.
- Applicants must obtain acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
- Individuals with previous long-term residence experience in Japan are not eligible.
- Strong research achievements and publications are highly desirable.
